Become a certified whitewater raft guide with the International Rafting Federation (IRF) - the only globally recognised standard for professional raft guides. Five days of hands-on training on real glacial whitewater in Skagafjörður, taught by an IRF Instructor with 30 years of guiding and 15 years of teaching experience.

This is not a classroom course. You will be on the water every day.

Who this course is for?

• New guides who want to start a career in whitewater rafting
• Experienced guides who want international IRF certification
• Kayakers and outdoor people who want professional river skills
• Safety kayakers, trip leaders and anyone working around moving water

You do not need previous rafting experience, but you need to be comfortable in water and reasonably fit. If you already have guiding experience, this course prepares you for IRF assessment.

Some of the stuff you learn

• River safety - hazards, risk assessment, group management on moving water
• Reading whitewater - currents, eddies, waves, holes, and how to choose your line
• Boat handling - paddle commands, guiding position, steering strokes, manoeuvres
• Rescue skills - swimmer recovery, flip drills, throw bag work, wrap situations
• Trip leading - safety talks, guest care, communication between boats
• Equipment- PPE, whitewater crafts, rescue
• The guide's judgement -  when to run, when to walk, when to say no
